List of total Ramsar Sites in India for all competitive exams
Ramsar Sites are special wetland areas that have been recognized under an international agreement called the Ramsar Convention. The goal is to protect these places and make sure people use their natural resources wisely.
The Ramsar Convention, also known as the Convention of Wetlands, was started in 1971 by UNESCO and officially began in 1975.
India is part of this agreement and joined on February 1, 1982. Currently, India has 75 Ramsar Sites, making it a significant participant.
The largest Ramsar Site in India is the Sundarbans. It’s a vast area recognized for its ecological importance.
Chilika Lake in Odisha and Keoladeo National Park in Rajasthan were the first sites in India to be recognized under this convention.
Tamil Nadu leads the count among Indian states with 14 Ramsar Sites, showing its commitment to preserving wetlands.
The smallest wetland in India is the Renuka Wetland in Himachal Pradesh, covering an area of only 20 hectares.
Ramsar Sites List was updated in July 2022 with five new sites from India.
